March 2012 – Blog

New York Knockout NY-KO Lufisto

Wow it’s been a long time. So much has happened over the past month!! Lucha Vavoom Valentine’s Day show was quite the experience.  I FINALLY got to work with someone who I consider my mentor, Cassandro, as well as Estrellita from AAA and Sicodelico Jr., three huge Mexican stars. Everything went great and we all went all out.  Unfortunately Cassandro got hurt in the last match of the week. That’s what happens when you go balls out.  He tore two ligaments and his meniscus and still continued with the match.

Lucha Vavoom in Calgary

I felt it necessary to step it up with such amazing talent around me, so I dove off the speakers which are about 10-15 feet in the air. It doesn’t sound like a lot but it was a lot for me to do since I’m DEATHLY afraid of heights (NY_KO Fact #445) but once you’re up there and the crowd is cheering you on there’s no going back.  This lead to a hairline fracture in my foot, or a “stress” fracture, which means it’s not broken but if you don’t lay off of it, the foot may break.  I waited a month and a half to go to the doctor, of course, so now I’m taking it easy for the next three weeks… easy meaning no training or boxing.  I will not be missing any bookings.

Besides main-eventing with Cassandro at Vavoom, I checked another one off my career bucket list by wrestling for Shimmer Women Athletes. It was such an amazing weekend in Chicago. I got to reconnect with a few people and get to know them really well, I got to wrestle my girl Lufisto, and I got to meet tons of girls who share the same love for pro-wrestling.  The talent was overwhelming and humbling, but I was so glad to be a part of it.  Thank you Danger for your support and having my back!

Speaking of Allison Danger, I’m off to train a client and then headed to Las Vegas to retain my Adrenaline Unleashed Women’s Champion. I think Allison Danger is a great role model and huge inspiration to a lot of women workers, and I know I looked up to her before I even started in the business. (East coast).

I started a new diet program. I hate the word “diet.” I like “lifestyle change” a little bit more. I’m supposed to be cleansing and rebalancing my body with organic foods and adrenal and endocrine supplements. It’s day three for me and I’m not going to lie, I’m hungry. But it’s a 42 day commitment which is nothing!! What I’ve learned so far is Organic food is expensive, but tastes WAY better than the meat and fruit I get from Jons. If you want to check out my program, go to Goldswellness.com.

That’s about it for now. There are tons of shows coming up in the LA area including the Dynamite D Memorial Show on April 13 at the Santino Dojo, MexPW and Dungeon Championship wrestling, where I get my revenge on Thunderkitty!!

So You Think It Can’t Happen To You…

New York Knockout Stop HIV

Everyone’s heard the expression “it’s a small world” before. Well the world gets even smaller when you get into a business like Pro-Wrestling. We share stories, we share moves, we share gossip, we share love and we share hate. But some workers also share blood, and more often than not, beds.

It’s a very sensitive subject that I’ve had to teach to 12 year olds. But when I sit back and think about whether I got through to them, it hit me that most adults that I work with probably don’t know the facts. So I’m writing about it.  Maybe it’ll hit the “dirt sheets,” and wrestlers can become more aware: What is HIV, how can you contract it, and how can we prevent it from spreading?

HIV (Human-Immuno Deficiency Virus) is the virus that causes AIDS (Auto-immune Deficiency Syndrome). There are five bodily fluids that can transmit the virus: blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-cum and breast milk. It can be passed on when one of these bodily fluids comes in contact with an uninfected person’s broken skin or mucous membranes. For example, unprotected sex, sharing needles, and getting an infected person’s blood into an open wound (think barbed-wired death match).

If anyone has read my blogs before, you know I’m outspoken about ring rats making their way to the locker room. Well guess what classy ladies? If you have a sore or open cut in your mouth and you’ve been handing out mouth-hugs for the past 18 bookings, you can contract HIV from an infected person as well.  Oral Sex is another way HIV can spread.

By now everyone in the business has probably heard about Andre Davis, who was charged with 14 counts of felonious assault for having sex with women without telling them he was infected with HIV and was sentenced to 32 years. Davis was tested positive in 2009, so he went on infecting people for 2 years, not to mention the women he infected may have infected others. Ladies, do yourselves a favor, use a condom. And if Davis was being safe in the first place, he never would have contracted the virus.

I used to have PLWAs come to my classroom to speak to my students on how they contracted the virus. This doesn’t just happen from having sex with multiple partners.  I’ve had wives come in and speak about how their husbands, who they trust and share their life with, had given it to them. One man knowingly gave it to his wife, and said to her “I told you that you were my queen, and we’d be together forever.”

When a person is infected with the virus, the virus attacks their T cells (immune system) to make copies of itself. So as the virus goes up, your T cells go down. When a person’s T-Cell count goes lower than 200, this is when they are considered having AIDS. This can take up to an average of 8-10 years of the time the person was infected.

As pro-wrestlers, we are in denial all the time. That pain in my neck is no big deal, I didn’t tear anything in my knee it’s just sore…I can’t get HIV, those five women I slept with last week looked clean… HIV can be asymptomatic! An infected person can carry it around and spread it for years without knowing it.  The only way to know for sure is to get tested. I’m sure everyone is computer savvy since your reading this right now. Look up on the internet where you can get tested confidentially for free.  There is currently no cure for HIV or AIDs, but there are treatments out there that can control the virus so a person can have a long, fulfilling life. The sooner one finds out he or she is infected, the better chance you have of controlling the virus and preventing it from passing it on.  Keep in mind, the virus has a window period of 2 weeks to 6 months, which means the virus may not show up in that window of time. If you think you may have been infected, you’ll need to get tested in six months from that date as well.

I don’t think there’s going to be a huge revolution in the wrestling world where all promoters are going to require proof of being HIV negative in order for you to wrestle for them. Promoters may take it as too much of a “hassle.” But personally, I have my paperwork in hand and peace of mind. Please go get yours.
